space Graphite is a very stable form of carbon. Clay is mixed with graphite to lighten and harden the medium. It is commonly referred to as pencil. When little or no clay is present the graphite becomes softer and the effect is darker. This medium is often used for drawing and sketching. Although most pencil drawings are handled in a "sketchy" style Arnold often takes his drawings beyond this point and the end result has a very finished and refined appearance.
Transparent Watercolour is a very old medium. As described in its name, water is used to thin the paint and gum arabic is the binding agent that makes the pigment transparent. Watercolour is most often used on paper in a layering technique which is typically applied in several washes. White paint is almost never used. To achieve highlights and lighter areas, very little paint is applied so the paper shows through. By using less water, Watercolour can be a very colour-rich medium. Although more colour-rich, the paint still remains transparent and light colours cannot be painted over darker ones. Gouache, on the other hand, is an opaque watercolour, that contains a white pigment to eliminate the transparent quality which means light colours can be painted over dark colours.
This is a printing process that the majority of limited edition reproductions are produced with. The original piece of art is photographed and burned into a metal plate. Inside the printing press the ink covered press rollers have paper pass through, whereby the image is pressed onto the paper.
Giclee is a new and improved form of producing limited edition reproductions. There is no need for the colour separation process as with the Offset Litho's making colour much more accurate. The ink jets spray pigment onto the paper to produce the image. It can be printed onto paper like watercolour paper and even canvas. This gives the Giclees print a look that is more accurate to the original piece of art than any other printing process.
This is a term used to describe reproductions with a specific edition size. For example, there could be 750 in one edition and there will never be more of that edition printed. These limited edition reproductions are all hand numbered from one to the last number in the edition. (for example 1/750 to 750/750). Each print is identical and although some people feel the lower numbers are more desirable, there is no difference in quality from print number one to print number 750. Along with being numbered by hand they are also each signed by the artist. They are often referred to as 'Signed and Numbered' editions.
An open edition is a series of prints with an unlimited number of copies. These are of course, not numbered and most often are not individually signed by the artist. Because of this, the retail price of these prints is much less. The Artist Proof is an additional run of prints to the regular edition, but does not exceed 10% of the edition size. They are printed at the same time as the Limited Edition and are of the same quality. They are signed and numbered just as the Limited Editions are but the letters A/P precede the number (eg. A/P 4/75). Artist's Proofs started a few hundred years ago during the dawn of the printing age. It was at this time that the printing process required the artist to proof the printing from start to finish. At that time and often today as well, the proofs belonged to the artist. For that reason, and because there were so few, collectors found them to be more desirable. This increased their market value to about 20% more than the regular edition. This means the artist has individually painted colour onto an already printed image. This gives an original quality to the reproduction. Typically watercolour is used and works very nicely with black and white Giclee prints since they can be printed onto watercolour paper.
A remarque is an original piece of art drawn or painted right onto the reproduction. It is usually done in the margin and the subject typically compliments the subject in the print. This of course increases the value of the print and makes it a one of a kind. |
